Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit
Objective
The City of Melissa is proud to announce the addition of a Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Unit to our Police Department. This specialized unit aims to enhance road safety, protect state highways from damage, and ensure compliance with Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. By enforcing these regulations, we aim to support the fair use of our highways, ensure commercial vehicles adhere to registration and weight restrictions, and promote the safety of all drivers sharing our roads.
Mission
The mission of the CVE Unit is to monitor and manage commercial vehicle traffic on Texas highways. The unit ensures that commercial vehicles comply with state laws governing weight limits, motor carrier safety, hazardous materials transportation, and vehicle registration through weight checks and inspections.
Background
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement in Texas dates back to 1927 when truck traffic began to heavily impact the state’s limited roads. Recognizing the potential harm to infrastructure and public safety, the Texas Legislature authorized the Texas Highway Department to employ inspectors and enforce weight and registration regulations. Over the decades, the CVE has evolved from a small group of licensed and Weight inspectors to a fully-fledged division, now part of the Texas Highway Patrol, dedicated to the safety and integrity of Texas roadways.
