[ARCHIVED] New solid waste service starts on Oct. 5

CWD trash and recycling carts

New solid waste service starts October 5 in Melissa

Starting on Monday, Oct. 5 most residents will be putting their trash and recycling carts out on a new day because the City of Melissa has entered into a new solid waste contract with Community Waste Disposal or CWD.

Residents should review the CWD brochure that accompanies the delivery of the new carts to determine their new collection day. The brochure includes a map of the new routes along with other useful information regarding the services provided. The brochure also appears electronically at https://www.cityofmelissa.com/DocumentCenter/View/566/CWD-Solid-Waste--Brochure-for-City-of-Melissa.

Among the new services provided is the monthly collection of bulk trash. Each Friday of the month, starting with the Friday of the first full week of the month, CWD trucks will be collecting bulk trash such as furniture, appliances, and other large items that do not fit in the poly carts. Bulk pickup will occur on the first Friday of the month’s first full week for residents in the Monday and Tuesday routes. Wednesday route homes can set our bulk trash items on the second Friday, homes on the Thursday route can set our bulk trash items on the third Friday, and Friday route homes can set out bulk trash items on the fourth Friday. A calendar is available at https://www.cityofmelissa.com/164/Bulk-Items.

In addition to unwanted furniture, acceptable bulk items include: toys and yard tools clearly marked as bulk items; bundled carpet in four-foot lengths; fence panels no larger than four by six feet; bagged leaves; washing machines; dryers; water heaters; and kitchen appliances. Refrigerators and freezers are also accepted but must display a tag certifying the removal of refrigerants. The brochure includes information on items that are not acceptable.

CWD will also collect hazardous household waste (HHW) on a monthly basis when residents call the company at (972) 392-9300, Option 2, and schedule the pickup. Acceptable HHW items include poison, solvent, oil-based and latex paints, aerosols, used motor oil, auto batteries, fluorescent tubes, and flat screen televisions. Cathode ray tubes are not accepted. Once residents call to request an HHW pickup, CWD will mail a collection kit to the home. HHW and used electronics should be placed by the front door at 7 a.m. on the assigned collection day according to the instructions provided in the kit.

Soon the company will activate the CWD app for Melissa residents that will allow customers to communicate directly with CWD on service-related issues such as missed pickups, scheduling service, cart repair, weather-related service alerts, and other service requests. It will be available for iPhone and Android devices.

The new contract with CWD was the result of a public bid for solid waste and recycling services for the Melissa community.   Five qualified firms submitted bids and CWD offered the lowest price and the most services. The company features a proven track record as an active municipal partner, demonstrating a willingness and generosity in supporting community projects. Melissa joins some 30 other communities in the North Texas area that have chosen CWD as their solid waste provider.
