Form of Government
Effective November 2011, the citizens of the City of Melissa adopted its first Home Rule Charter, thus converting the City from a Type A General Law City to a Home Rule Municipality. Effective May 2012, the City of Melissa has six City Council Places and the Mayor is a voting member of the governing body..
Each member is elected at large and by Place, and serves a three-year term. City Council elections are staggered and are usually on the first Saturday in May of each year. Those interested in serving on the City Council must be at least 18 years old and a resident of the City of Melissa.
The Mayor and Council meet in regular session twice monthly on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at the Melissa City Hall at 6:00 p.m. and on an as needed basis.
